Patrons and President

Roy Poole

Roy Poole has been a very good friend and loyal supporter of the band for many years. He was the hard working Chairman of the former ‘Friends of Nightingale MacMillan Unit’ for whom the band performed numerous concerts in support of.  Roy became a Patron of the Band in 2005 and now continues to organise concerts with Derwent Brass to raise money for numerous worthwhile charities.

Steven Blakeley

Steven was born, grew up and still lives in Derbyshire.  He attended schools locally and went on to study English and Drama.  He trained as an actor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and at the Athanor Theater Akademie in Germany.  As well as working as an actor, Steven teaches drama, leads workshops and directs for colleges, schools and theatre companies.

Steven has worked in theatre, television and radio, with credits ranging from Shakespeare and other classical works to new writing and pantomime.  His local theatre credits include Derby LIVE’s productions of Mother Came Too, Lucy Gannon’s Broken Hearted and Much Ado About Nothing.  He is best known for playing PC Geoff Younger in ITV’s long running drama, Heartbeat.  In 2006, Steven received a nomination in the category of Most Popular Newcomer at the National Television Awards and in 2011 made a guest appearance in Emmerdale.  As well as his work in Britain, he has worked in Poland, the Czech Republic, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, Spain and South America.

Steven has been associated with Derwent Brass for several years and in 2009 he and his wife were delighted to have them play at their wedding.  2011 saw Steven take the great honour of becoming a patron of Derwent Brass.

Nev Eden - President

The first President of Derwent Brass was Eric Johnson, a very well known figure in the East Midlands and former solo euphonium player of the band. Regrettably Eric passed away in 2003 and therefore we were pleased that founder band member Nev Eden accepted the position of Band President.

It is fair to say that without Nev Derwent Brass probably would not have existed as he was undoubtedly the inspiration and driving force behind the formation of the band in 1992.

In those early days of the band any job that needed doing would be tackled by Nev, and as a playing member he has occupied the principal cornet seat, front row tutti cornet, soprano cornet, 2nd & 3rd cornet, Eb tuba and even helped out in the percussion department!

Over the years he has served the band as Secretary, Contest Secretary and Chairman and has also been a member of Midlands Area Committee

Nev studied music at Salford College prior to moving to Derbyshire and as well as his involvement with Derwent Brass he has been the Musical Director of the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band and Rolls Royce (Derby) Band.

Family and work commitments prevented Nev from regular playing with the band for some time however we are now pleased to see Nev home, playing back with the band as a valued member of the cornet section.

Everybody at Derwent Brass is both delighted that Nev accepted the position of Band President and thankful for all his hard work which saw Derwent Brass begin its journey back in 1992 flourishing into the band you see today.
