"Damn good one from Derwent..."

"Damn good one from Derwent and Keith Leonard inspires a contender for the title." 4BR.com

Derwent Brass have now returned from an eventful weekend in Harrogate at the Brass Band National Final Championships. Following a quality rehearsal around midday Saturday, (where the band were also issued with their new walking out jackets and stage drinks bottles) the band set to the stage at around 19:00, both anxious and confident following a good run of rehearsal preparation.

National Finals Harrogate Rehearsal

Derwent were drawn number 13, unlucky for some, but not for the band as they laid out a quality staged performance that all members of the band were happy with. Positive comments followed from around the hall and online press, including 4barsrest:

“Good opening and there is real detail to be heard in a persuasive approach by the MD. There is a nice hint of restraint with this - neatly played with a flow of musicality…. a fine deep sound on display and good dynamics too. Neat and tidy with a degree of self control that has been absent in too many today. Skillfully managed ending. Highly enjoyable stuff.”  4BR.com

As the results finally came the band were awarded a very respectful 5th place – this placing also meaning they are by far the highest placed Midlands based band. Albeit slightly disappointed not to come in the top 3 the band are delighted with their performance on stage and of course the automatic promotion to the Championship Section following the Midland Regional Contest result earlier in the year. Congratulations to bands that competed on the day – some fine performances out there!

"A strong performance from Midlanders Derwent Brass under Keith Leonard found favour in the hall but not so much in the box to come fifth..." 4BR.com

Again special thanks to our two guest players Paul McGhee (Bb Tuba) and Beth Calderbank (Bass Trom) who were able to step in for our missing regular players on this performance. The band prides itself on being the same band on both the concert and contest stage, but when matters arise out of our control we are grateful to be able to call on friends of the band to help us out.

Keith Leonard commented: “I am delighted with the bands performance this weekend. There was a good atmosphere and sound projecting from the band in the rehearsal and I was anxious this would be reflected on stage – it was and you can’t ask for more than that.”

The band now only have two rehearsals to prepare for the Bolsover Entertainment Festival which takes place this coming weekend; as former champions of the event we are hoping to once again do well and look forward to seeing you there cheering on DB.
