An Evening of Gilbert and Sullivan with KLOS

November 19th saw Derwent Brass perform a joint concert with the KLOS (Kirkby Light Operatic Society) to present an evening of Gilbert and Sullivan music from most of the operettas at Ashfield College, Kirkby in Ashfield. The concert also featured guest soloists Helen Kirk (soprano), Joy Rayner (contralto), Trevor Fearn tenor) and Patrick Dawson (baritone).

The society kicked off the proceedings with music from the Sorcerer, before Derwent Brass (under the leadership of Assistant MD Adam Rutter on this occasion) gave a rendition of the rousing ‘March of the Peers’ from the opera Iolanthe. Trial by Jury, The Zoo, and HMS Pinafore, were the next operettas featured by the Society, followed by a selection from Patience or Bunthorne’s Bride, as it is sometimes known, performed by the band. The rest of the half went on in this manner with the addition of brilliant acting from the vocal soloists.

The second half opened with the band this time performing a selection from Mikado. The soloists and choir then took the reigns again, before Derwent Brass returned with the Gondoliers. There was time for one more selection of vocal music, before Derwent Brass drew the evening to a close with Salute to Sullivan a tribute containing many of the well known themes, which feature in the operettas. The many positive comments heard after the performance once again point to a ‘good time had by all’!

Adam Rutter, conductor of Derwent Brass for the evening praised the band on how well they responded to the challenge of a whole concert dedicated to the music of Gilbert & Sullivan: “The band always performs well, but especially in this case where they had limited time to prepare for the performance following our concert with the Swingle Singers the weekend before. This shows how pleased we are to have quality musicians around the stands, who always respond well to what is presented to them, together with a well thought out rehearsal schedule."

The band maintains its busy seasonal concert schedule this Saturday December 3rd, performing with the Dalesman Male Voice Choir, in Landau Forte Theatre, presenting a Charity Christmas Concert in support of Cancer Research UK. Click here for more details.
