Bolsover Festival of Brass 2014 Champions!

5th October 2014 saw Derwent Brass take to the stage at the Bolsover Festival of Brass, held at Heritage High School in Clowne, to compete in the Championship Section of the UK's largest entertainment contest!

"That is how you make an entrance! Well done Derwent Brass!" (4barsrest)

Up against some of the very toughest competition in the Midland's, Derwent Brass gave an 'all out' performance of a programme offering an ecletic mix yet one that offered a 'modern composers' theme to provide a sense of coherency from start to finish.

Transforming the stage aesthetics with a unique setup, choreography and dedicated mood lighting changes, the band woke up any sleepy heads in the audience with a committed rendition of 'Los Hermanos (De Bop)', (arranged by Sandy Smith) complete with lip trills, intricate percussion work, jazzy cornet solo, the works!

Following this was a very interesting piece - a movement from '5 Riddles For Brass Band' called 'The Return of the Samba Cows', by Idar Torskangerpoll. This number, most commonly known for its recording by Oslofjord Brass, described as a fusion of dance, contemporary and American marching band music, certainly gave food for thought to the audience and was undoubtedly the most contemporary piece performed in the contest. (We thank our Contemporary Music Associate, Paul McGhee for his support in sourcing the work!)

To keep the modern Norwegian theme going, the band then shifted mood entirely into 'Domen' (The Dome) a slow rubato solo written by jazz trumpeter and composer Jan Magne Forde and was performed superbly by Derwent's Flugel player - Pam Davis.

"A beautifully played solo from Derwent's flugel player Pam Davis! Best soloist I have heard today!" (4barsrest)

For the Finale, the band moved to another modern work, this time from the pen of Jonathan Bates whose funk based work 'Tortugero 6' was first performed at the RNCM Festival a few years ago. Bold full band passages and excellently executed solo passages from prinicpal cornet (Dave Neville) and solo euphonium (Adam Rutter) led to a huge ending. But wait...

Out from the applause came the band's off beat claps to start another Norwegian arrangement, this time of the popular gospel traditional 'Can't Nobody Do Me Like Jesus' which was arranged in 2010 for the famous Stavanger Brass Band. This rousing fast number featuring tuba/euph and cornet solo passages gave a real upbeat feel to a well recieved programme, leaving everybody with a smile on their face!

"Just like their entry, Derwent demonstrate how to end a concert. Solid performance! Best so far!!" (4barsrest)

The band were of course therefore absolutely delighted to be crowned the Bolsover Festival of Brass 2014 Champions!
