Derwent Dishes Out The Gongs

Derwent Brass held their AGM on Wednesday 5th January endeavouring to review the past year, discuss plans forGrant Ashenden - Champagne Moment Of The Year 2011 and award prizes for outstanding contribution.

The 'Derwent Brass Champagne Moment Award' presented at the meeting, is voted for by the members and is for any particular event or moment during the past year that could be considered a "Champagne Moment", whether it be a humorous incident, catastrophe, sublime playing, etc. After the votes were all counted up some interesting runner up nominations were noted, which included the Trombone section dressing-up as nuns to perform ‘I Will Follow Him’ at the Treorchy Concert in November, Principle Trombone player Martyn Johnson being stuck in a cable car, sublime solo playing by Dave Neville (principal cornet) and Adam Rutter (principal euphonium) and finally Rory Steel’s tremendous tam-tam strike at one of our Christmas concerts (problem is, he wasn’t supposed be playing fff!).

However the overall clear winner was the band's percussionist Grant Ashenden; the votes being for his impeccable timing – arriving seconds before and joining his band members on stage before last years area contest!

Derwent Brass Bandsman Of The Year 2011 - Chris LeonardThe award for 'Bandsman of the Year' (selected by the band's Musical Director) this year went to Solo Cornet player, Chris Leonard. Chris was omnipresent in everything that the band did over the course of 2010, from playing in the full band and 10 piece ensemble to contributing enormously to all marketing aspects of the band (including Facebook, Twitter, the band website and more). The band's Chairman Graham Johnson described Chris as an inspiration, totally committed to the band and its ethos, as well as being a talented musician, who will to help drive the band in going forward.

Also awarded was flugel player Pam Davis for her 100% attendance record over the past year – again an inspiration for us all!

Formal election of officers and committee saw the election of one new face to the band committee, that of Edward Walford as Press and Promotions Officer. Ed will be working closely with Chris Leonard to further raise the profile of the band, both through the internet and printed press outlets.

The band looks forward to a very successful 2011 with its promotion back into the Championship Section, together with a number of high profile engagements which includes a joint concert with the world renowned ‘Swingle Singers’ in November.
