Ensemble at Winshill MC, Burton

April 28th saw the Derwent Brass 10pc ensemble perform in another new setting of the Winshill Methodist Church, Burton on Trent. This time not for a wedding, but instead a formal evening concert to a capacity crowd.

With the ensemble conductor (Adam Rutter) not avaliable, our regular MD Keith took the ensemble through Graham Johnson - Derwent Brass Soloista varied programme which was boxed into various sets starting with Classical and working through the likes of Pop and Film leading to a favourite Big Band finish. Amidst the sets were some great solo contributions, most noticeably 'Concerto de Aranjuez' played perfectly by the band's Flugel, Pam Davis, followed by an amazing rendition of the world's most covered pop song 'By The Time I Get To Phoenix'. As the MD suggested and crowd agreed, Graham Johnson's version on the solo Tenor Horn takes some beating with his laid back 'ad lib' beautiful jazz style.

"On behalf of Winshill Methodist Church, we are writing to say a big Thank You for the concert last Saturday. You performed up to the usual high standard we have come to know and expect from Derwent Brass, be that the full band or the ensemble.

The whole event was greatly enjoyed by all who attended and Derwent Brass made many new friends and admirers. Within minutes of the concert ending we were being asked when the next one would be and further conversations, emails and phone calls echoed those requests.... we hope you will be wiling to return on a similar basis either Christmas 2012 or in 2013.

In the meantime, we wish you well during your 20th anniversary year.."

Mr & Mrs Beresford, Organisers of the event.

The ensemble thoroughly enjoyed the evening, are delighted with the funds raised for this ever improving local church, and are very much looking forward to a return visit. Keep an eye on our diary for a future confirmed date.
