New Bass Trombone

Derwent Brass are pleased to announce the appointment of a new Bass Trombone player - Chris Fower.

Chris Fower Derwent Brass Bass TromboneOriginally a native of Rotherham, Chris now resides just a few miles from Derwent band room in Holloway. Chris helped the band out on their latest CD recording and performance at the Bolsover Festival of Brass before accepting the position of Bass Trombone in October. 

He gained a graduate diploma in jazz from the City of Leeds College of Music and then took the Advanced Studies Course at the Royal Academy of Music in London during which time he was bass trombone with the European Community Youth Orchestra.

Upon leaving college, Chris’s first brass band experience came as a member of the famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band. After enjoying two years with the band, Chris developed successful playing and teaching careers in the North of England and subsequently in London.

Chris was a member of Shirley Bassey’s Orchestra and the British Philharmonic Orchestra and has played extensively in music theatre, having held chairs on the National tours of: "Cats", "Phantom of the Opera" and "Les Miserables", and deputising regularly in London’s West End. Other freelance work has been varied including performing and/or recording with: The Northern Sinfonia, The Michael Nyman Band, English National Opera, The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra.

 Chris held the position of Executive Manager at British Trombone Society and various lead roles within instrumental education, often themed around informal learning for brass, including working widley as a face to face trainer of instrumental teachers for Trinity Guildhall. He has also been involved with instrumental development with Edwards Instruments as UK consultant and ‘endorsee’ for Bass Trombone working with ‘TheValve’. Chris was central to the development and commercial success of ‘pBone’ and now leads on creativity and education across the Warwick Music Group, owners and manufacturers of the pBone brand.
