New Brass for Silver Celebrations

Funds supported by the Rank Foundation have enabled Derwent Brass to purchase 3 Besson Prestige Cornets from Cory, the world’s number 1 ranked band.

Derwent Brass has had a kick start to their silver anniversary year with new commissions, new players and this continues with the recent acquisition of 3 Besson Prestige Cornets. When the band saw the opportunity to purchase the ex-Cory cornets which had been used in their European, British Open, National Championship and Brass in Concert victories in 2016, they were straight on the phone to Band Supplies to seal the deal.

Band Supplies MD Ronnie Tennant commented: "What an opportunity this is for a player to get their hands on an instrument that helped create banding history. Cory demands the best and these German built Besson Prestige cornets are certainly that. They are in great condition, play superbly and come with the added extra bonus of being played by the cornet section of the number 1 band in the world.”

Derwent Brass Band Manager Chris Leonard commented: “Derwent like many bands are unsponsored and so it was additional funds from the Rank Foundation that really made this purchase feasible. We own a full set of mainly Besson instruments around the band, apart that is from the Cornet section. One of our objectives is the continued development of all band assets and buying the best cornets in the business is another milestone on that journey. Thanks must go to our Fundraising Officer Kevin Stewart for all the hard work he puts in to our grant applications.”

The Rank Foundation is a charitable trust with a mission to improve the lives of people and their communities across the UK. “The Directors have certain ongoing commitments and these, combined with the fact that they are receiving an ever-increasing number of appeals mean that it is only possible to make grants in a relatively small number of cases. We are therefore particularly pleased that we have been able to make this grant to Derwent Brass.” (Rosamond McNulty MSc, the Grant Administration Manager)

Derwent Brass would like to formally thank the Rank Foundation for their support and wish them every success in their continued work. For more on the Rank Foundation visit www.rankfoundation.com
