New Flugel and Cornet Signings

Following Richard Bates's sabbatical from playing, Derwent Brass is extremely pleased to welcome Catherine Johnston to the flugel seat. As a Derby girl and now living in Belper, it’s very much a home-coming.

Cat's musical journey started age 7, on trumpet at South East Derbyshire Music Centre with Kevin Holdgate. She earned her grade 8 distinction aged 13. When at the Junior Birmingham Conservatoire under Alan Thomas, attained her LTCL & ATLC Trumpet diplomas aged 18.

Locally, success came with her winning the Derby Rotary young musician of the year in 2008 award and Derby Arts Brass open champion 3 times with distinction (2011-2012 & 2013).

Subsequently she moved to The Royal Northern College of Music (RNMC) in Manchester where she studied under Murray Grieg, and played with the Opera Orchestra, Jazz Collective, Big Band, Brass Band, Wind and Symphony Orchestra, and the Session Orchestras, whilst also being a member of the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain, and The East Midlands Youth Jazz orchestra (now called Hot House). Cat is pleased to have graduated with a BMus Honours Degree in July 2017.

Cat traveled as an Erasmus exchange student to the Norwegian Academy of music Oslo, studying with Jonas Haltia, Tine Thing Helseth, and Anthony Plog and competed in the National Championships in Trondheim with 'Vestre Aker Musikkorps wind band'.

This follows the recent addition on 2nd Cornet of Emily Bramble, previously holding Principal Cornet seats at Cockerton and Darlington Youth Bands, and more recently was Solo Cornet with the Cockerton Silver Prize Brass Band.
