New Signings In The DB Ranks!

Derwent Brass would like to extend a warm welcome to Naomi-Ruth Greatorex and Mick Allen, who have recently joined the ranks of our Cornet and Trombone section, respectively.

Naomi expressed interest in the vacant Cornet position and joined in time to make her first debut at our recent Summer Concert at St. Helen’s Church, Etwall on 2nd July, pictured below with a capacity audience.

Mick on the other hand agreed to join Derwent Brass as an ‘extra’ but nonetheless official long-term member, following news that our Second Trombone player, Howard, was going to be missing for a few rehearsals, due to job committments. Indeed Mick is a conductor’s ideal player, being able to swap from ‘Tenor’ to ‘Bass’ Trombone at the drop of a hat and then when the full compliment is there, it just means a bigger wall of sound!

Both Naomi and Mick began their playing at an early age; Naomi 7, performing with orchestras, concert bands and jazz groups and Mick at age 11 with the Frederick Gent School Band in South Normanton, Derbyshire. Naomi ‘saw the light’ a couple of years down the line and entered the world of brass bands. In her new venture, she played with Bakewell Silver Band and had a brief spell with the now defunct Darley Dale Band. Mick has always been associated with brass bands playing with the Huithwaite Prize Band during his school years and with the Shirland MW Band for a brief 25 year spell!

More recently, since 2000 Mick (pictured on stage with Derwent below) has played for the Alfreton Big Band along with a couple of years at Thoresby Colliery Band before joining Derwent. Naomi in 2010 played Solo Cornet for Stannington Brass Band, based in Sheffield, before joining Derwent in her current position.

Keith Leonard, the band’s Musical Director commented; “I am thrilled to welcome Naomi to the band. Her enthusiasm to performing at the highest level is illustrated by the commitment that she has shown since joining. Her experience not just as a brass band performer, but as a musician in the wider sense, will surely be a key asset for the band. I hope Naomi feels happy joining the Derwent family just as much as we do welcoming her to the band.”

Keith also stated on Mick's appointment; “Mick is the conductor’s dream band member, his versatility means that the Trombone section is rarely left with an empty seat. It is clear from his many years in banding that he brings a wealth of experience with him and we look forward to his future with the band. I am thoroughly delighted that he has joined and also wanted to become a part of Derwent Brass.”

Naomi completes the back row cornet line up sitting next to Alan Nelson on Second cornet and Jen Marsden on Third, whist Mick 'officially' sits on 2nd trombone!
