Fresh from an intense period of change, Derwent Brass has once again shown its unwavering commitment to excellence - both on and off the contest stage.
Following the challenge of finding a new rehearsal venue after being left without a home, the band has now successfully relocated to Highfield Farm in Etwall. This significant move was no small feat, requiring not only the transportation of all the band’s assets, equipment and library, but also making quick and careful acoustic adjustments to ensure the best possible rehearsal conditions. Despite this upheaval, the band remained laser-focused on the Midlands Regional Championships, which took place on Sunday.
And once again, for the third year running, Derwent Brass secured a coveted podium finish, taking a top-three spot. Just one place away from a trip to the National Final Championships at the Royal Albert Hall, the band demonstrated remarkable consistency in this high tier of brass banding.
Reflecting on the achievement, Music Director Jack Capstaff (pictured during the band's Open Rehearsal event) noted the band's ability to adapt and rally behind a new approach. With a reduced rehearsal schedule and a strong emphasis on musical engagement over rigid contest preparation, the band proved that prioritising artistry and consistency leads to success.
"As always, we took some risks in our performance," Capstaff shared. "We made it our own, stamped an authority of 'Derwent' about it, and found the beauty in the material we were given."
This achievement is even more remarkable considering the logistical challenge of relocating the band mid-season. The resilience of Derwent Brass is a testament to its members' dedication, the strength of its governance, and a shared passion for music.
A huge thanks goes to all who contributed - band members, trustees, and supporters alike. While missing out on an invitation to the National Finals is always bittersweet, the band remains proud of its ability to maintain its high standing year after year.
We also extend our congratulations to this year’s Midlands Regional Champions, GUS Band, alongside Desford Colliery in second place and Ratby Band in fourth. The friendships and mutual respect between musicians across all bands in the region make contesting a special experience, and we are proud to share the stage with such talented ensembles.
In addition, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Besson Artist James McLeod for stepping in on euphonium, and to Paul Holland (Musical Director of the National Champion Band of Great Britain, Flowers) for his invaluable time working with us in the build-up. And, of course, but by no means least, to Jack Capstaff, our own Music Director, for guiding us through the challenge of a difficult test piece while still finding the space to make it a characterful and unique performance.
"A very dynamic performance, virtuosic, classy and full of fine energy and musical ideas." Steven Mead
With a new home in Etwall and exciting projects on the horizon, Derwent Brass continues to thrive. The future is bright for Derbyshire’s premier brass band.
