Derwent Brass is delighted to announce the appointment of Charlotte Burton to the band on Baritone. A highly accomplished young musician with a wealth of experience, Charlotte brings exceptional talent, versatility, and dedication to the role.
A Strong Musical Foundation
Hailing from Alfreton in the Amber Valley of Derbyshire, Charlotte began her brass band journey with the Shirland Miners Welfare Training Band before progressing to their senior ensemble. Her passion and skill soon led her to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where she studied Euphonium under the guidance of renowned tutors Matthew White and Philippe Schwartz.
Charlotte broadened her musical skill set with a year of trombone studies and also worked with a variety of leading brass musicians, including respected baritone player Mike Cavanagh. Her commitment and artistry were rewarded when she graduated in 2022 with a First-Class Bachelor of Music (Hons) in Performance. During her time at the Conservatoire, Charlotte performed with both the RBC Symphonic Brass and the RBC Brass Band, contributing to the latter’s winning performance at UniBrass 2022.
Contest Experience and Success
After a short break from banding while completing her studies, Charlotte returned to the contest stage with Blidworth Welfare Band on Euphonium, quickly earning the Solo Euphonium seat. She later moved to Newstead Brass, where she enjoyed success at major competitions including the NEMBBA, NWABBA, and the Wychavon Festival of Brass. Her time with Newstead also included helping the band secure promotion back into the prestigious British Open Spring Festival.
A Multi-Instrumentalist and Educator
Charlotte’s talents extend far beyond the Baritone and Euphonium. She is an accomplished player of the tenor trombone, bass trombone, violin, and viola, and she performs regularly with orchestras, bands, and ensembles across the region. Alongside her performing career, Charlotte is a Music Support Practitioner for the Derbyshire Music Partnership and works as a peripatetic teacher of brass, violin, and viola, inspiring the next generation of musicians.
A Familiar Face at Derwent Brass
Charlotte is no stranger to Derwent Brass, having guested with the band on numerous occasions. Most recently, she featured in the band’s acclaimed Pictures at an Exhibition concert at Derby Cathedral, where her musicality and stage presence left a lasting impression.
Speaking about her appointment, Music Director Jack Capstaff said:
“Charlotte is a fantastic addition to the band – a first-class musician whose energy, talent, and commitment will strengthen our Baritone section and the band as a whole. We’re excited to see what we can achieve together.”
Looking Ahead
With Charlotte now officially in post, Derwent Brass looks forward to the exciting opportunities and musical experiences ahead. Her arrival strengthens not only the Baritone section but also the band’s commitment to musical excellence, innovation, and growth.
