Derwent Brass is delighted to announce the appointment of Chris Fower as Bass Trombone.
Widely regarded as one of the UK’s leading bass trombonists, Chris brings an exceptional depth of experience across elite brass banding, orchestral performance, commercial music, and jazz. His appointment represents a significant statement of intent as Derwent Brass continues to strengthen its artistic and competitive position.
Chris is a former member of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, one of the world’s most iconic brass bands, and has also previously played with Derwent Brass. He joins the band at a time of clear ambition and momentum, adding authority, experience, and musical weight to the low brass section.
Alongside his brass band credentials, Chris has enjoyed a distinguished international performing career. He has worked with leading orchestras and ensembles including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Northern Sinfonia, the BBC Concert Orchestra, English National Opera, and international touring productions such as Moscow Ballet. His versatility extends across jazz, commercial, and music theatre work, including notable performances with Loose Tubes, the Creative Jazz Orchestra, and the Michael Nyman Band, amongst many others.
His extensive theatre and commercial credits include major West End productions such as Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, and Starlight Express, a decade touring with the Shirley Bassey Orchestra, and performances with a wide range of celebrated artists including Andrea Bocelli, Charlotte Church, Katherine Jenkins, and Russell Watson.
In parallel with his performing career, Chris is internationally recognised for his impact on music education and innovation. A former Director of Innovation and Creativity at Warwick Music Group, he is the inventor of the pBuzz beginner brass instrument and the creator of the pCircles learning model, both widely adopted worldwide and instrumental in widening access to brass music for young players.
Speaking on his appointment, Chris said:
“Derwent Brass is in a really exciting place right now. There’s a clear sense of direction, ambition, and musical purpose, and that’s incredibly motivating. I’m looking forward to being part of what the band is building and contributing at the highest level.”
Music Director Jack Capstaff added:
“Chris is a musician of exceptional calibre and experience. His appointment brings real authority to the bass trombone seat and strengthens the band musically as we continue to build towards our long-term artistic and competitive goals.”
The band looks forward to welcoming Chris as it builds towards the Midland Regional Championships and upcoming concert performances, including a collaboration with Russell Watson and Nancy May.
Derwent Brass would also like to place on record its thanks to Chris Clayton, former Bass Trombone, for his commitment and contribution over many years, and wishes him well for the future.
