Derwent Brass claimed the title at the 2026 Birmingham ConsTest Open following a standout performance that combined musical maturity with confident execution across the band.
Performing against a strong field, the band delivered a performance of Music of the Spheres (the 2026 British Open Set Test) noted for its control, detail and musical intent — qualities that have become a hallmark of the ensemble in recent contests. From the opening bars through to the closing moments, the approach balanced energy and precision, with a clear sense of direction throughout.
The result saw the band awarded ConsTest Champions 2026, alongside the Highest Placed Championship Section Band prize, with a total of £700 in prize money. In addition, Chris Robertson was recognised with the Geneva Award for Best Euphonium.
Chris performed on Solo Euphonium for the contest from Brighouse and Rastrick Band, with the band’s regular Solo Euphonium, Matt Spriggs, unfortunately unavailable. Further support came from Ross Royal (Brighouse and Rastrick Band and former member of Derwent Brass), who bolstered the percussion section, alongside Darren Lea of Foden's Band, who added strength to the solo cornet bench.
Soloists and sections alike contributed to a cohesive performance, with particular strength in the band’s lyrical playing and ensemble clarity. The result marks another significant step forward for the band, reflecting both the depth of preparation and the continued development of its musical identity.
The contest, held in Birmingham, once again provided an engaging platform for bands. Credit must go to the organisers for delivering a thoroughly well-run and thoughtfully structured event, with an approach that allowed performers to focus fully on their musical delivery. The band also extends its thanks to David Thornton and Stephanie Binns for their time and consideration.
Speaking after the contest, Musical Director Jack Capstaff commented:
“I’m incredibly proud of the band. The way they’ve approached this performance — musically and collectively — is exactly what we’ve been working towards, and it’s great to see that recognised. A special thank you as well to our good friends Chris, Darren and Ross for stepping in to support us for the contest. We’re very fortunate to be able to call on players of such talent.”
Reflecting on the result, the band added that it was a performance they were particularly proud of, and one that it was especially pleasing to see recognised. Congratulations were also extended to all bands in the prizes, rounding off a competitive and enjoyable contest.
The result continues a strong run of form for Derwent Brass and provides further momentum as the band looks ahead to upcoming concerts and the Spring Festival at Birmingham Town Hall in May.
