The band enjoyed yet another podium finish at the Bolsover Festival of Brass (2019), this time with a Latin-themed set securing a runner-up spot.
Skelmanthorpe secured the victory with Roberts Bakery in third place and the Ratby Band in fourth. 4barsrest described the set as inventive, featuring both original works and classy works from MD Jack Capstaff, with adjudicator Alan Morrison focusing in the successful jazz interpretations.
The programme included:
- La Bocina Espanola (Jack Capstaff)
- El Capitan (John Philip Sousa)
- Nana (Manuel De Falla arr. Jack Capstaff) Cornet Soloist: Dave Neville
- Fuego Cubano (Jonny Richards arr. Jack Capstaff)
- Samba Del Gringo (Gordon Goodwin arr. Jacob Vilhelm Larsen)
La Bocina Espanola is an original and highly demanding work by Jack, with a clever play on the Sailor's Hornpipe, which was followed by El Capitan the classic Sousa march, immediately demonstrating the band's scale of dynamics.
The performance of Fuego Cubano was actually a brass band world premiere for which special rights had to be sought and featured the fairly recent signings of both Simon Baum on Solo Trombone and Ben Jowett on muted Trumpet (Repiano).
In true Dave Neville style, the imaginative and haunting rendition of 'Nana' was extremely well received, with 'man of the match' going to Adam Bloor for his superb kit work throughout but especially on the finale - Samba Del Gringo.
But don't take our word for it - you can watch it for yourself:
