Derwent Brass Triumphs at the 2025 LBBA Open Contest

Derwent Brass is proud to celebrate a major success at the 2025 Leicestershire Brass Band Association (LBBA) Open Contest, securing first place in the top section with a standout performance of Peter Graham’s 'Harrison’s Dream'. The contest, held at the Bosworth Academy (Desford), welcomed almost 30 competing bands across multiple sections, making this a particularly meaningful achievement.

A Winning Performance of ‘Harrison’s Dream’

The band’s interpretation of Harrison’s Dream showcased both precision and expressive depth, tackling the work’s technical challenges with clarity, energy and a unified musical vision. From the opening moments, the performance carried a sense of confidence and momentum that resonated strongly with both audience and adjudicator.

Adjudicator Paul Norley praised the performance highly, concluding his written remarks with:

“A very fine musical and artistic performance. Clearly a very well directed and classy band.”

These remarks reflect the careful preparation and commitment that went into shaping the musical line, pacing and character of the piece.

Individual and Section Honours

Alongside the overall victory, Derwent Brass also celebrated two significant additional awards:

Best Instrumentalist - Matt Spriggs — Solo Euphonium

Matt’s expressive playing and control throughout the performance stood out as a highlight, earning him individual recognition in a strong field of soloists.

Best Trombone Section - Rob Wilshaw, Simon Baum & Chris Clayton

The trombone team’s balance, tone and technical assurance earned them the award for best trombone section.

Leadership, Preparation and Pride

The result marks an important moment for the band, which has enjoyed a period of artistic growth and strong performances across the season. Special thanks go to Music Director Jack Capstaff, whose musical leadership, detailed preparation and clear artistic direction played an essential role in the band’s success.

Jack has continued to challenge and develop the band throughout the year, and this result is a proud reflection of that shared commitment.

A Strong Field and a Supportive Community

With bands from across the Midlands and beyond taking part, the LBBA event once again proved to be a vibrant and competitive musical showcase. Derwent Brass extends its warm congratulations to all participating bands, including close friends at Enderby Band, who finished as runners-up after delivering an excellent performance of their own.

The band also offers sincere thanks to the LBBA organisers, volunteers and adjudicators for hosting another well-run and welcoming contest.

Looking Ahead

This victory provides a perfect springboard into a busy upcoming period for Derwent Brass, with major concerts, festive performances and community events on the horizon. The band looks forward to carrying the momentum of this achievement into the months ahead and sharing more exceptional music with audiences across Derbyshire and the wider region.
