Derwent Brass is thrilled to announce the signing of Rob Wilshaw as their new Solo Trombone.
Rob joins the band following their impressive podium finish at the Regional Championships and will make his contest debut with them at the British Open Spring Festival in May.
A graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Rob has an outstanding musical pedigree, having performed with Foresters Brass, Foden’s, and the Flowers Band, where he was named Player of the Year in 2018. He most recently played with the renowned Grimethorpe Colliery Band. His career has also taken him around the world, performing in Thailand, Singapore, Germany, New Zealand, and Norway, including as a soloist on Desford Colliery’s Far East Tour.
Speaking about his appointment, Rob said: "I’ve always had a great relationship with Derwent Brass, having guested with them over the years. Their commitment to excellence, artistic ambition, and professionalism have always impressed me. The band continues to go from strength to strength, and I’m excited to be part of this journey.”
Rob takes over the Solo Trombone seat from Simon Baum, who moves to 2nd Trombone following the departure of Alex Bland.
Music Director Jack Capstaff shared his excitement about the signing, stating:
"I’m delighted to welcome Rob to Derwent Brass. Having known him for many years, I’ve always admired his virtuosic playing. His arrival is a fantastic boost for the band, which is in a great place, receiving consistent recognition both on and off the contest stage."
Rob’s signing follows other recent additions to the band, including Jack Rudin (Euphonium) and Dale Hopkins (Tenor Horn), who joined from their Principal seats at Oddfellows Brass at the end of 2024. They enjoyed a memorable Christmas season with the band, including a special performance alongside Russell Watson at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.
Jack added: "It’s wonderful to attract such talented, passionate and committed young players - not just for the immediate benefit of the band, but also for our long-term plans as we continue to grow and evolve."

Derwent Brass extends its gratitude to Alex Bland for his contributions since joining last summer and wishes him every success in his future endeavours as both a rising conductor and instrumentalist.
The band’s next event is a conducting workshop and concert in partnership with the Brass Band Conductors’ Association at Landau Forte Theatre on April 12th, 2025.
