Derwent Brass and Black Dyke Patron Passes Away

Mike Richardson Nick Childs Patron Derwent Brass Black DykeMike Richardson, Patron of both Derwent Brass and Black Dyke sadly passed away on August 8th 2013. As a well known and respected character amongst mainly East Midland’s brass banding circles, he had various connections with local groups and became a good friend of Derwent Brass in recent years.

On an annual basis, Mike organised spring concerts in the Derby Assembly Rooms featuring Black Dyke (as photographed right), and last year he also organised an Autumn concert featuring the massed bands of Derwent Brass and Derby Central SA at that same venue.

Although a long-term patron of Black Dyke, it was only in April of this year when Mike became formally recognised as also a Patron of Derwent Brass, at their annual band dinner and awards night. “We were delighted that Mike accepted the title of being our band’s Patron. Not only did Mike demonstrate his clear support for the band in the huge concert he organised in 2012, but his plans for future events were several in number and large in terms of scale. Whilst not all of these ideas may now come to fruition, we are pleased that in his final days he penned some of these thoughts for us and it is our aim to fulfil as many as possible of these in his memory.” (Graham Johnson, Derwent Brass Chairman).

Mike, who died aged 68, played the cornet in his earlier years and it wasn’t until after he passed away that we discovered he learnt to play through the ranks of the Derby Railway Works Silver Prize Band; the same band that ultimately merged to form today’s Derwent Brass.

In addition to running his own chauffeur business, Mike was also a trustee of The Friends of Derby Salvation Army and generously supported various worthy causes and groups.

Our thoughts are with family and friends, in particular Nicola, Leanne, Gareth, Bethany, Connor, Declan and Sue, at this very difficult time.

To deliver one of Mike’s final wishes and to celebrate his music filled life, Derwent Brass are performing a Christmas Concert in Derby Cathedral on December 13th 2013.
