Paul McGhee wins European Composers Competition

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Derwent Brass, the band applied for and were successfully awarded a grant by the PRS for Music Foundation for a new work. For this the band chose the upcoming composer Paul McGhee who, as well as being known for some great innovative writing, has some historical ties with the band. This led to a fantastic work being produced which was premiered earlier this year in February and will be featured throughout the year.

The band were therefore clearly delighted at the news, announced midst a Spring Festival rehearsal on May 3rd by the band's MD, that Paul had indeed won the 5th European Composers Competiton held at the De Doelen Concert Hall in Rotterdam!

"Every member of Derwent Brass has a great deal of time and respect for Paul, perhaps no more so than myself; having known him for some time it has been fantastic and inspiring watching him progress. His intriguing, captivating and of course modern style of music is refreshing and the band really love playing his work and spending time with him during rehearsals. Both myself and the band are thrilled with the composition he wrote for us earlier in the year and of course his well deserved result at the Europeans. We are truly proud to be associated with Paul, both as a composer and as a friend." Keith Leonard, Musical Director
