This carefully researched book is the result of over ten years of work by Eric Johnson, a suberb musician, former member of Derwent Brass and lover of all things brass. The volume traces the history of brass bands around Staffordshire and Derbyshire from the late 1800s to the present day, and includes the input of many local people and organisations.
Eric Johnson illustrates their stories with a series of fascinating photographs and first-hand accounts, recalling bands whose members survived the Second World War to regroup afterwards and those which have recently formed. Some of the bands in this absorbing selection include the Newhall Band, Tutbury Silver, Gresley Old Hall, Salvation Army bands, Uttoxeter Town and Derwent Brass, together with the Burton bands.
Edited by David Kennedy on behalf of the late Eric Johnson, this book pays tribute to the tradition of the brass band, past and present.
