Welcome to Ed Walford!

Derwent Brass would like to give a warm welcome to Edward Walford, who recently joined the ranks of our Tenor Horn section.

Following the departure of long term member Karen Pitts, Ed expressed immediate interest with the band and indeed graced the 2nd Horn seat with immediate effect. In true bandsman style Ed continued to fulfil his commitments with his former band, Newhall and has now become an official member of Derwent Brass.

Ed has played in brass bands at all levels (including  Ashbourne Town Band, Huddersfield Brass, Yorkshire Co-op,  Newhall and Enderby) from non-contesting up to Championship Section, has taken part in international band tours and has dabbled on various instruments including Baritone, Cornet and Flugel. Admittedly Ed’s true alliance is with the Tenor Horn, the instrument he used to complete all his Associate Board Exams, and he was tutored on this by the infamous Sandy Smith, Melvin Bathgate and Philip McCann. Ed also brings experience with him in the form of a degree in music and a Masters in Arts Management.

Keith Leonard, the band’s Musical Director commented; “It is with great delight that I welcome and appoint Ed the 2nd Horn chair in the band. He is clearly a talented player and this has been shown by being chucked in at the deep end at two recent large concerts in the Great Hall of the Derby Assembly Rooms. Ed’s personality and already evident commitment blend well with the band’s values on quality and consistency and I hope his stay is a long and enjoyable one.”

Ed completes the Horn line up joining Pam Davis on Flugel, Graham Johnson on Solo Horn and Emma Davis on 1st Horn.
